Prophecy Night

As you know we are church that is seeking to put 1 Cor 11.1 into practice:

1Cor. 14:1   Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

To that end, we are teaming up with Wahroonga on 9th March to have a Prophecy Team night.

What is the gift of prophecy? Prophecy is the report of a revelation brought to mind by the Holy Spirit for the good of the church to build them up. It is not equal to Scripture, but must be tested. It can come about by a variety of means (impression on the heart, dreams, vision, scripture prompting etc.).

Wahroonga already has a team established of men and women who are seeking to grow in their knowledge and use of this wonderful gift for the church and they are gathering and have invited us along.

We have not yet established any formal team as such and so the invitation is open to ALL and ANY who are interested in learning more about this gift, and seeing it being used in practice. If that is you, please come! There is no pressure to do anything on the night. I will be preaching a message and there will be singing (restrictions permitting) and some time to practice the gift in a safe and controlled place.

When: Tuesday 9th March @ 7:30pm

Where: 21/7 Sefton Road Thornleigh

What: Teaching, singing, practice

Who: anyone interested!

Why: to seek to “earnestly desire” this gift for the good of our church!

RSVP: just text me and let me know you are coming

Sunday Recap: We Are A Generous Church
W E A R E.jpg

On Sunday we launched our 2021/22 Go Forward Fund. This fund enables us to do more than we could based on our regular offering. If you missed this announcement it is included at the start of the sermon recording for this week and you can pick up another pamphlet at church this week. We will be taking in the forms on Sunday March 7.

To help prepare our hearts for this and because we (especially me) are always in need of teaching on the topic of finances/giving I spoke this week on: Generosity from 2 Corinthians 8-9. If you missed it, head here to listen to the message.

The big question was: “Are you generous?”

The main point was: grace both motivates and makes possible generous giving.

In point 1 we studied two examples that Paul gives of generosity, the Macedonian church and the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Cor 8:1-9), and we saw that it was grace (not law or duty or pride or shame) that motivated them and made it possible for them to give sacrificially and generously.

In point 2, we looked at various practices and principles that Paul outlines in this chapter, namely: 1. Give Freely, 2. Give generously, 3. Give Courageously, 4. Give to God first, 5. Give as a good steward.

I hope the message helped you to be freed from selfishness and greed and empowered you to consider how you could grow in generosity.

A while ago I created a ‘Giving Worksheet’ to help people grow in their practical finances and generous giving. You can access this here: https://1drv.ms/b/s!Am0weP4m8K7QyjJfLJm5H8LbM6JT?e=en4JcH

Family Life Monthly
Paul Tripp Parenting

Each month its my plan to send out a resource to help us in a realm of our discipleship as a church Family. Some months will be on marriage, others on singleness, others on hospitality or sexuality, this month it is: parenting!

I recently listened to a fantastic talk by Paul Tripp on ‘Gospel-Shaped Parenting’.

You can listen to it here: https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/podcasts/tgc-podcast/parenting-is-gospel-ministry/ and there is a button to read the transcript if you’d prefer to do that.

Also, his book, ‘Parenting’ is a longer more detailed version of this talk. I highly recommend it. Buy it here

Some key quotes that helped me from the talk:

“Parenting, good gospel driven, God honoring, fruit producing parenting doesn't begin with theology. It doesn't begin with strategies. It begins with confession. And what you need to confess is that parenting is impossible.”

“One single word that is a comprehensive definition, but a practical explanation of what a parent is supposed to do. Hear this. Everything a parent does, everything a parent says, in every moment, in every day throughout the life of the child is meant to be representative.

It’s not what you want for your children, it’s not what you want from your children, it’s always, “I am representing the message, the methods and the character of the King, the message, and methods, and character, the King.I  am put to make this invisible King visible in the life of my children.”

Every time I exercise parental authority, here’s the plan. God makes His invisible authority visible in the lives of children by sending parents of authority to exercise authority in the life of their children. That means, parents, are you ready for this? Every time I exercise authority in the life of my children, it must be a beautiful picture of the authority of God.

I don’t know about you, but just saying those words makes me want to drop to my knees. Say, “God, help me. God, help me.God, help me. God, help me.” God will make His invisible grace visible by sending parents of grace to give grace to children who need grace.”

“A family is not meant to be comfortable. Are you ready for this? A family is meant to be transformational.”

“I would ask you to consider that there are really only two models of parenting. There's ownership parenting and ambassadorial parenting. The owner parent basically says, these children belong to me and it is my right and responsibility to get from those children what I want from them, and to produce in them what I want in them. That is contrasted with ambassadorial children that say, these children do not belong to me. They belong to the Lord, and my calling... Here this... Is to make the invisible presence, the invisible grace, the invisible power, authority of God visible in the lives of my children.”

He outlines that when we lose sight of our need for grace, our common weakness that we share with our kids and our role and calling to be an “ambassador” to them, the following happens:

1.     First, You will turn moments of ministry into moments of anger. God-given moments of ministry, rather than being about Him, they’ll be about you, about your schedule, about your peace and quiet, about something you want to watch on television, about some phone call you need to have, some anger you have at the conversation you’ve had 10 other times.

2.     Second, you will do that because you personalize what is not personal. We make their sins about us rather than about God.

3.     Third, they become your adversary rather than you being God’s ambassador. Thus, we fight against our children rather than for them!

4.     So, I settle for quick situational solutions that don't get at the heart of the matter. We go for easy fixes (punishments, “say you’re sorry”, etc) without going down deep into their heart, their need for Christ, their (and our confession) and their hope in Jesus!

I hope it blesses you!

Perhaps meet up with someone and have a coffee and discuss it!

Discipleship Resource

I mentioned on Sunday at Envision that running than running many seminars this year on: manhood, womanhood, marriage, parenting, singleness, etc. Our hope is that we as a church, with various giftings, experience, and maturity, can disciple one another.

To that end, myself and the Wahroonga team came up with a one-stop list for all the resources that we knew of at the time that were great on 14 different topics.

You can find that file here: https://sgparra.org.au/s/Discipleship-2019.pdf

Within it is a list of instructions on how to go about starting a discipleship connection with someone at church. For example, some singles may want to meet up and read one of the books together, or you may be lacking in your knowledge of how to study the bible so you can ask someone to teach you how to study a passage, or you may want to grow in parenting and so you approach some other parents and listen to some talks and discuss them while the kids are playing together!

I’d love to know if anyone uses this list and goes about discipling one another, just so I can see if this is effective or not!

I recommend Reformers as my bookshop of choice! And if you use this link: https://reformers.com.au/?ref=ref601211f89b8a6&fpl=dl you will get 15% off!

Copy of Envision 2021.png

It was such a joy to gather as a church family, feast on pizza and then outline our plans for the year as a church. If you missed Envision we recorded it but for some reason the recording only captured Doug and his family eating dinner with a blank screen…I am not sure what happened, sorry team! Nonetheless I will seek to amend it asap!

See below for a brief recap of some elements!
